Several years ago I was a participant on the 10 Week Adaptive Ski and Ride Program at Sunshine Village. At the time, I was completely unaware of just how much this one decision would impact the direction my life. After one season there was such a drastic difference in my abilities on and off the hill. I gained confidence and realized all the things I could achieve with the right support system behind me. I became involved with Rocky Mountain Adaptive eager to give back to an organization that had transformed my life. I found my passion in skiing but quickly realized that it was much more than that. I wanted to use my story to advocate for other individuals with disabilities and be sure that everyone, regardless of their abilities was given an opportunity to participate in sport. Over the years I have had many different roles within the organization. I started volunteering on the summer programs, mentoring other participants and have represented Rocky Mountain Adaptive at a number of different speaking engagements. Most recently I was able to complete three of my Student Practicums, which were requirements for my Bachelor of Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies. This allowed me to further understand and gain experience with all aspects associated with running a charitable organization.
I am now writing this to introduce to the world that I am the new Executive Assistant for Rocky Mountain Adaptive.
I am sharing my story in the hopes that people realize the power of sport. It is important to empower others to reach their potential, even when they don’t see it themselves. It may not always be easy, but hard work pays off and it will be worth the effort. Jamie and everyone at RMA gave me a chance when no one else would and it has turned into the most incredible adventure. It is also a testament to the positive and far-reaching impact that this organization has had on so many lives. I am forever grateful for my experiences. I am looking forward to this next year and being in a position to continue transforming lives.
